Well, hey, why not Blog? This will not be a daily effort, but I'll ramble on as the Muse inspires.
The title? I was invited to speak as a novelist at a University of North Carolina "Writing Careers Night" event last year, and went, expecting maybe two or three students
to be interested in fiction writing.
After all, it was a "careers" night -- and as John Stienbeck commented,"Next to fiction writing, betting on horses seems like a stable career!"
Fifty or so students crowded around, with wonderful questions about how to support their love of fiction writing, and we had a great discussion.
Driving home I thought, Why is it that so many of us are compelled to write? --And the answer floated into my head as if the Muse, riding shotgun, had clearly spoken aloud:
"The soul must speak -- and longs to be heard."
And I do believe she's right.
All for now, and all zee best,
Kate Betterton
